Questionnaire Response

Peter Kotyk - River East - Transcona - 4

What got you into politics?

My children’s education. My neighbor a former school trustee said I’d make a great trustee. I’ve tried to live up to his expectations of me, not only in duty and responsibilities but in spirit as well. I believe there is no greater calling than to insure as best we can, our children’s future well being through quality public education.  So many doors open with that designated accreditation. Ever generation has the opportunity to take charge, to make changes, to make their own mark via their educational journey. I feel in my heat they will step up to the challenges and the unknown. Quality Public education is a stepping stone to a brighter future.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have been so very fortunate to have served this community, ward 4 in the RETSD for many years. I have held vurtually ever position a number of time, including Board Chair on 3 occasions.  The years have allowed me the opportunity to visit every school in the division and multiple times for my ward 4 schools. This allowed me the opportunity to converse with the school principles and other steak holders and bring their concerns and suggestions to the boardroom. As a trustee, I was and continue to be committed to being a voice for public education. Since first elected I have never missed a River East Collegiate Graduation for 24 consecutive years, 25th and 26 were covid related, and I again attended the 27th this June. I have also attended many of the Sun Valley, Emerson, Maple Leaf and Donwood elementary schools graduations,  as well at the Middle years John Pritchard and Chief Peguis schools. Also attended many band concerts, tumbling rallies, love to read, field days, basketball Volleyball  hockey and football to name a few. I enjoyed every minute with our student, their educators and parents, grandparents and friends.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Government is implementing a new funding formula to all school divisions by next year. We believe it will be a type of categorical grant based on a per student basis, and out of that fund the division will have to decide how that grant will be divided among our responsibilities and requirements, such as how much going to salaries, busing, heat, light, etc. As a new entity it will be a challenge and experience will be of great value.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

The good people of North Kildonan have been nothing short of amazing in accepting me into their conversations and supporting my journey with their greatest natural gifts…their children, grandchildren and others. I do not take this task lightly….I will do anything, anytime, anywhere to try to have them reach their full potential towards a rich and rewarding life…They are our CHAMPIONS! GOD bless, and Thank-you.
