Questionnaire Response

Sandy Lethbridge - St. James - Assiniboia - West Ward

What got you into politics?

I attended a School Board meeting to advocate on behalf of my daughter who was a member of  the St James Assiniboia Divisional Choir. The choir were chosen to compete in the MusicFest Canada Choral Competition in Toronto and Division Policy at the time prohibited her age group from travel out of Province.

The Choir Executive Parents presented our case to the School Board so the choir could participate in a national competition after MusicFest Canada judges selected them.  We were successful and our choir was able to travel and represent our School Division.  I was elated that we convinced nine trustees that our students should go and compete.  Happily our students came home after winning awards.

This gave me a taste of advocacy and representing parents in order to provide solutions that worked on behalf of our students.

It was at that point that I decided I would like to work for the parents in my ward in the next election as a member of the School Board!

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I was always been active in the community including volunteering as a Board Member at the daycare centres that my daughter attended – Fairlane Children’s Centre and Lakewood Children’s Centre.  I was a member of the Parent Council at Lakewood Elementary for 6 years as well as the Music Parents Group at Hedges Middle School and John Taylor Collegiate.  I was the Fundraising Co-Chair for the St. James-Assiniboia Divisional Choirs for three years.  I served as President, Secretary and Treasurer on the board of directors of Winnipeg Condominium Corporation #1  – Birch Park Condos for 15 years.

I currently serve as the Chair of the Board Personnel Committee for 11 of the last 12 years, I have been a member of the Education, Finance, Governance and Marketing Committees.  I also served Divisional Committees including Early Childhood Education, Division Mental Health, St James Scholarship Foundation and Scholarship.

I was acclaimed this Spring as the one of the Vice Presidents for the Manitoba School Boards Association.  Additionally I also served as the MSBA representative member of the Provincial Arts in Education Steering Committee for four years and previously as a Regional Director for the School Divisions within the City of Winnipeg.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

We must ensure our schools stay focused on student achievement, safety and student wellness.

That our division continues to have a broad range of programs available including the Arts, Sports and French Immersion and assisting those with special needs.

All students must feel safe in their inclusive school environment.  I am proud to have organized our School Division to participate in each Pride Winnipeg Festival Parade since 2011, with attendance now expanding beyond our St. James Assiniboia high schools as well as involving parents and teachers.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

The primary function of a member of a school board is to work with other Trustees in the determination of policy.  These decisions set the direction for the St. James Assiniboia School Division.

If parent and/or resident has a concern to share with the Board,  this will be discussed with respect and diligence. Each Trustee is able to provide their feedback.  Each Board Trustee is only a single vote among nine.  In order for a decision to be made, one needs the majority of Board Trustees. This nurtures collaborative decision making for the betterment of the students, staff and the community.

One may say or promise to make changes but this cannot be done by 1 Trustee. Other Trustees need to provide support or this change will not happen.

I am proud to have been part of a team for 12 years’ that made many positive changes to support education in St. James Assiniboia.
