Alia Harb - Pembina Trails - 3
Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?
As a mother of three school aged children and long time volunteer I am constantly looking for meaningful engagements. Running for school trustee was a natural progression for my 20 years of community work. I have been involved in various programs for children and youth and have been committed to fostering a love of service in them.
My love for community service is complemented by my skills, experience, perspective and passion. In 2019 the province will be reviewing the educational system, I will use my professional skills as a mediator to ensure the voices of all stakeholders are represented in that critical conversation.
What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?
The experience I bring to the board is strong communications skills and leadership.
As a conflict resolution practitioner I am able to hold crucial conversations in a balanced effective way. I am currently the vice president of Family Mediation Manitoba and a coordinator for a nonprofit agency. This experience is relevant because I know firsthand how to do be resourceful with budgets and provide effective programming. Essentially I have the ability to be manage and am able to do more with less.
What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?
The issues I stand for is that I will work hard to ensure that policies created translate well to the benefit those that are impacted rather than become a barrier.
Secondly, I stand to provide open lines of communication with community members to ensure concerns and interests are addressed readily. School trustees do a lot of work to ensure that schools run well. Unfortunately, people have been largely disconnected and may not see the value of the division. As elected representatives of the community it’s important that the constituency be often engaged in dialogue so their voices stay strong at the board level.
In addition, it’s important for the board to represent the interests of all the community by balancing the needs of students, teachers and tax payers.
As a homeowner and parent providing the best education and home is important. I’m not for raising taxes and I’m not for cutting programming for students. As a mediator; balancing of interests and needs for multiple stakeholders is something I’m confident I can ensure our taxpayers.
What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?
What I appreciate the most about ward 3 is the work the division has done in creating Pembina Trails Alternative High School. It warms my heart to see our division making strides to make sure that children have a chance at success in a unique way.
