Questionnaire Response

Angela Dunn - St. James - Assiniboia - East Ward

What got you into politics?

Over the last twelve years I have worked with children and youth who are struggling to succeed. My experience as an Educational Assistant, Program Co-ordinator for at-risk families, and Residential Treatment Counsellor for children in care have given me a firsthand look at the challenges children face while attending school. The stakes are high, when children struggle in school, over time they lose the motivation to try. If youth believe they can not succeed they will not attend.

After years of witnessing children lack the resources they need, I would like to become a School Trustee to advocate for children, youth, and their families within the school system. As a proud member of the St. James community, I will put my experience supporting others to work, while listening closely to my fellow St. James residents.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

In addition to my work supporting children and youth, I am also a mother of three children attending SJASD schools, which helps me understand the challenges parents face.

I also have experience working as a program co-ordinator for a program called Empowering Families, which has made me an experienced advocate for families. I have extensive knowledge of resources in the city and would seek to increase partnerships between our school division and some of the great agencies already serving children and families in our city.

Finally, I have been the chair on boards for 5 years, most recently serving as the chair on the Linwood Parent Council. I understand board functions and am a team member who appreciates the importance of working towards a common goal.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

1.Early Intervention: Children who are assessed as higher risk for poor outcomes should receive extra support early so we can ensure a good trajectory. If voted in as school trustee I will fight for increased funding to resources such as:

    • Speech/Language Pathologists
    • Social Workers
    • Psychologists
    • Reading clinicians
    • Educational Assistants

No child should be without the support they need to be successful.

2.Increased Communication: The school board needs to be in close communication with our community so our neighborhood can engage with school issues and help direct policy changes.

How will I do this?

    • Town hall meetings
    • Post policy decisions on social media
    • Question periods at public board meetings.
    • Teacher surveys to report on educational outcomes

3.Developing Community: I will look at programs to connect children and seniors, newcomers with Canadian families, and foster support groups for parents with children of special needs. My focus will be to teach kids not only math and literacy, but how to be kind, good citizens.

4.Innovative Problem Solving: Inflation has hit everyone hard. Rising school fees add to this strain, while the school division struggles with decreased funding. I will look at innovative solutions to reduce costs for schools and for parents.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

As a parent of students in the SJASD and a resident of the East Ward I can attest that we have some great schools and wonderful teachers here. However, the last few years have been hard on students and families, our schools must ensure they are addressing current challenges. I will listen to kids, parents, teachers, trustees, and the greater community to identify where we can improve, and make the necessary changes.

If elected October 26th I will work hard to ensure St. James-Assiniboia schools are a safe space for our children to grow and succeed.
