Questionnaire Response

Fiona Shiells - St. James - Assiniboia - West Ward

What got you into politics?

As a young person, I was brought into politics by Jim Rondeau who taught me that active participation in civil society could make a difference in our community. He taught me the value of knocking on doors, meeting people and listening to what they have to say.

In the last year, several things happened to make me think this was my time to get involved. As a mother, I have been re-engaged in politics by a concern for my children’s education. Our EAs and teachers need support, and we need to ensure local families make the choices on what is best for our neighborhood  schools.  At the same time,  as a public health nurse, I became concerned with a growing anti-science sentiment. I want to ensure that our education system remains firmly rooted in science.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have lived my entire life in St. James. I attended school in the area, and when it came time to set down roots, I chose Crestview because I love Crestview. Both of my children attend school in the ward. I know where St. James shines and where improvements need to be made, because I have seen it first hand.

From leading Girl Guides to supporting local business, I have been there to Support Crestview. I worked with Jim Rondeau on volunteer appreciation events, and Girl Guides planting trees at optiminst park.

I am a public health nurse, providing care to incoming Ukrainian refugees, new mothers and students in school.  I have a master’s degree from the University of Manitoba, including graduate courses in Public Administration. I have the knowledge and experience to make good on my promises.

I have boardroom experience. I served as Vice-Chair of the Manitoba Brain Injury Association and worked with city councilors to as a board member of the City of Winnipeg Committee for Public Safety.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

High Quality Education for Every Child

I will focus on smaller class sizes, more after-school programming, and inclusive, accessible education that leads to better outcomes.

Smaller Class Sizes and More Support

Kids do best when they get more attention in the classroom. More one-on-one time with teachers and EAs means students can get the help they need.

Support for French Immersion and Bilingual Programs

As Trustee, I will work to strengthen our French Immersion program, and a explore adding new language arts programs like Ukrainian, and Ojibwe.

No School Closures

As Trustee, I will never vote to close a local school.

School Breakfasts and After-School Programming

As Trustee, I will support the creation of a school breakfast program and afterschool programs in the division, including drop in sports programs and heritage language programs.

Supporting Alternative Education Options

I will work to expand options for alternative education and ensure that St James offers educational opportunities for everyone in our community.

Safer Ways To Get To Class

As Trustee, I will push for walking school buses, and active transportation paths from our communities to our schools to help kids get to school in safer, healthier way, while reducing traffic in front and surrounding schools.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I believe that no child should be left behind. I believe our LGBTQ youth deserve safe spaces in school. I support indigenous voices in stating that All Children Matter.
