Questionnaire Response

Jessica Perry - Pembina Trails - 1

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I grew up in Charleswood and I attended schools here – Royal School, Charleswood Junior High and Oak Park High School. With the strong education I received in our public schools, I went on the obtain a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Manitoba and Bachelor of Science in Nursing at McGill University.

My spouse, Julian Saba, and I  are raising their two young children in Charleswood. Our sons benefited from the excellent early years education programming by Pembina Trails School Division, such as the Assiniboine South family drop-in and “Kindergarten Here We Come”. Our eldest was excited to start kindergarten at Ecole Dieppe this year.

I am currently working as a Primary Care and Community Nurse in a bilingual environment. With my combined background in health, community development and education, and as a parent, I will bring a fresh perspective to the Pembina Trails School Division.

What experience will you bring to complement your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

Currently, I am working as a Primary Care and Community Development Nurse with a focus on improving access to health care and health outcomes for newcomers, as well as, developing harm reduction strategies for people with harmful substance use.  This experience will complement my role as School Trustee as I have developed skills and strategies to engage with diverse people and groups to improve accessibility and healthy outcomes.

Previously, I have worked in Student Services at the University of Manitoba and as a Clinical Education Facilitator with the University of Manitoba College of Nursing. These experiences give me a unique perspectives as an administrator, educator, student and parent that I will bring to my role as School Trustee.

Finally, this varied experience will complement my role as School Trustee through an understanding of linking service delivery to improve education outcomes for our students.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Quality Education: I support a return to smaller class sizes to ensure all children receive the support and attention they deserve. In order to support this goal, I will advocate for fiscal sustainability and stable funding while minimizing reliance on property taxes

Healthy Public Schools: I will work on improving sustainability, accessibility, reconciliation and supporting child development in Pembina Trails.

Community Development: With my background in community development, I will engage with neighbourhood leaders and residents to build positive environments for our children and communities to flourish.
