Questionnaire Response

Michael Thompson - Fort Rouge - East Fort Garry

What got you into politics?

People in the community wanted a choice in this election and I listened. People want to know what is going on in their city and community. I will help answer people’s questions. We have amazing individuals and groups working hard in the ward and the city and they need help from city departments. With challenges in work, life, and environment, I would be that councilor to help reduce the challenges by government. This would go a long way to giving people hope. You should be able to trust and believe in the person you elect. I could not say that with the current leadership. We live in one of the best countries in the world and we are wasting our opportunity to improve the lives of fellow Winnipeggers.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am different and proud of who I am and my life experiences. A small sample, I have volunteer in the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg and I have worked with business teams to complete important projects. I believe in lifelong learning and listening to experts and being part of a team means we can be great than the sum of our parts. Being a councillor would be an honour and I would work every day to help our ward be successful. Having worked on projects, committees and festival taught me that things never go smoothly but with a talented team around you, you can overcome these obstacles to still be successful. There are answer to the challenges facing us if we are willing to listen and have the courage to help.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

From my roles in leadership and organizations there are areas that are working well and neglected areas. My goal is to address areas that need help and work to explain why something is not being address or how we can address it. Every city should have a mechanism for abandon lots and buildings. At one point the city had all sorts of rules for horses because that was the method of transportation. The time has come to adapt and build rules that address better road construction, better housing actions and community policing. The ward wants these things moved on; I want to work for the ward to make these things happen. Short term it is responding to the needs of people in the ward, long term it is tackling the systemic problems.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

Our form of government though democracy combined with our cities the help us live in suburban areas in Canada. Each election and generation have needs and issues either met or unfilled by the structures we inherit. I am stepping up for our generation to take ownership for problems and the continue to build on successes. Communications is part of who I am, you can trust me to help share what is going on. It is not all doom and gloom in our ward, there are remarkable things going on and I would be proud to be there to support organizations. Whether you can vote or not, you would have me in your corner. I want to give a sincere thank you to my team and family. They have been a constant support so we can be successful.
