Questionnaire Response

Michael Yeo - Louis Riel - 1

What got you into politics?

I have always had a healthy interest in the political process and understanding the influence politicians can have on me as a citizen. Society as a whole has always interested me. I really like how politics provides me the opportunity to share my skills with the community. Discussing problems and brainstorming solutions is always fun and exhilarating for me!

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have gathered a unique perspective over my professional career in the past 15 years. I have built my skills as a project designer and manager in the construction industry while finding creative solutions to unexpected problems. This includes being acutely aware of cost controls and returns on investment; the idea that spending $10 today to save $20 tomorrow is always a good call.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I have three core issues that I feel very passionate about in my role as school trustee.

  1. Expanding Trades Awareness and Facilitating Easier Access to Training
There continues to be a growing need for skilled trade professionals and I believe students are under-informed on the type of lucrative career a trade can provide. I want to make it easier for students to get into trades by offering some of the early post secondary trade school training at the high school level. This is similar to Advanced Placement classes often seen in university education.

  2. Facility Upgrades
Using a ROI (return on investment) calculation to prioritise building upgrades including LED lighting and geothermal heat pumps. These upgrades will provide a reduced operating cost over the long-term and have multiple government grants to assist with the capital investment.

  3. New Non-Tax Revenue Models
Investigate using some of the assets of the school division to generate additional revenue for the division, including the rental of gymnasium facilities and shops classrooms during non-school hours.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I have been a lifelong resident of the Louis Riel School Division (LRSD) having grown up in St. Vital and graduating from Dakota Collegiate. I moved east to Windsor Park where my wife and I bought our home, where I continue to find new renovation projects every day. I have always been a consensus builder and able to find common ground. I am excited to help guide LRSD to meet the challenges of the 21st century and help students excel in any path they choose.
