Questionnaire Response

Brenda Bage - River East - Transcona - 4

Why did you decide to run in the 2018 (Winnipeg Civic Election / School Board Election)?

I was taught that if you aren’t happy with the way something is being done, you either stand up or shut up.

I am a mother of 2 children, who are just beginning their education journeys. “Shutting Up” when it comes to their futures, and the futures of their peers, is not an option. I have decided instead to “Step Up”.

I feel that as a parent with children in the school system, I have a better understanding of the issues and topics that are important and relevant to students. I believe having that different viewpoint will enable me to make sure the schools have the information, resources and materials they need to be able to address these issues.

I want to make sure that decisions are being made only after considering how they will impact all groups involved – students, schools, parents, related organizations and taxpayers.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I would like to see more consideration and consultation with those affected before changes are made to the system. Schools, families, affected organizations and the community should all have input when major changes are being considered. “Family life” and family schedules/obligations have changed dramatically in the past 20 years, and I understand those demands. Making decisions without consideration for and consultation with those affected is not acceptable to me.

I would also like to see a review of key policies, such as those regarding bullying, inclusion, and accessibility, and clear procedures be established for consistent implementation.

What is something that you appreciate about the (City of Winnipeg / the ward / the school ward or school division) you wish to represent?

The River East Transcona School Division encompasses a large area with a diverse demographic. I think our children can learn a lot from each other as they grow and learn.

This is the neighbourhood we chose to raise our children in. The community atmosphere is evident and this is where our strength comes from.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am committed to making sure the system works as best as it can for everyone involved. Balancing the needs of the schools and taxpayers should not need to mean forgetting the needs of the students and parents. All groups need to be considered when making decisions, policies and changes.

As a parent, I have even more incentive to make sure we get this right.
