Questionnaire Response

Sheri Hanson - River East - Transcona - 2

What got you into politics?

I am a long-time resident of the school division and a mother of 3 who is very passionate about their education.  Two of my children have disabilities, and I have experienced many difficulties with the school system in getting the help they require.  I needed to be an advocate for them, just like many other children need.  I believe that children are successful if they know they are valued and have the right tools.

I know RETSD used to be a leader in the education system, and stagnated decisions have not made the division a continued leader in student support.  I want to create pathways for student & teacher success.  Becoming a trustee will be the most effective way to make the needed changes to programming needs.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

Two of my children have disabilities, and I found a way to get them the help they need through my determination.  I educated myself on the school system rules and was able to navigate the policies to be successful.  I have also seen a lot of the valuable programming that RETSD offers young children and how it helps benefit them.

Working in the school system, I found that even the most challenging student behaviours can be corrected when they are understood and provided proper guidance.  Children that are not engaged in school are going to have poor results.  I will use my knowledge about different issues to help build plans to help these children.

I am self-motivated, enthusiastic & collaborative – I would use these talents to drive results needed to support the school system.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

With working in the school system, I have witnessed first-hand that many children also have struggles either due to family or learning issues that are not being appropriately addressed – I know there must be a way to help these children out through different programs, I will use my knowledge to help build these new policies.

Early learning programs have been cut, and I know that these are valuable for many families; these should be better supported to have them reinstated and perhaps expanded to later ages as they are engaging and fun for children.

Food insecurity is another item I have witnessed in the school, and something needs to be done to help.  Children do not do well in school if they are hungry.

Moving into future budgets, I would like to minimize possible increases by reviewing costs and planning proactively to minimize future expenditures.  I plan to get space for students without needing to build more schools.

Finally, additional programming needs to be offered for later-year students to succeed in life post-graduation, as some simple life skill lessons are unavailable such as how to handle finances or make decisions to build their career.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I will bring fresh ideas to the board, looking at old problems in new ways.  I will be accessible to you to hear your needs and speak on your behalf.

I have been a resident of the area for 17 years; I know many of the parents and teachers of the RETSD.

Please feel free to contact me if you need any other information.  I do have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SheriHansonTrustee.

I am excited about the prospect of the future as a trustee.
