Questionnaire Response

Sheri Irwin - River East - Transcona - 1

What got you into politics?

I’m running for school board trustee because it provides me with an opportunity to contribute and give back to my community. Voting is a very important part of living in a democratic society and it’s a responsibility that I think many people take for granted. As citizens it’s important that we vote for leaders that best represent us and our interests. Most of my adult life I’ve held leadership roles and I believe I’d be the perfect candidate to effectively advocate on behalf of the students, staff and parents of the RETSD community.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have a strong work ethic and for the past 15 years I’ve worked at New Flyer Industries. I’ve held several positions but currently hold the position of Business Development Manager at NFI Parts, a subsidiary of NFI Group. I effectively manage and lead a group of several individuals and I possess many of the qualifications, skills and experience it takes to be a great leader and School Board Trustee.

Over the years I’ve also been actively involved with my children at schools and community centers throughout the RETSD and participated on the Parent Advisory Councils (PAC).

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Open communication: I will make myself accessible and available. I will take the time to listen to constituents and work collaboratively with the community to shape a vision for the board that is reflective of the input of parents, students, and community members.

Transparency: All residents have a right to know what children are learning about and how well they are learning. They also have a right to know how their tax dollars are being spent and a right to participate in discussions on the allocation of education resources in their community.

Parental Supports: Review lunch programs, before/after school programs and look for safe and effective ways for the students to get to and from school.

Classroom Sizes: The increase in student population has contributed to unmanageable classroom sizes. We need to put some resources towards supporting teachers and classrooms wherever possible.

Human Sexuality and Mental Health: This has become a hot topic. While I think it’s important to have certain discussions at an age appropriate time, I think it’s imperative that we continue to focus on teaching students to respect one another. School should focus on the fundamentals: reading, math, science, history, health and wellness etc.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

Children are our future leaders and they deserve a high-quality education. They also need supportive, inclusive, safe and nurturing environments so they have every opportunity to thrive and succeed. Over the past few years throughout the pandemic I’ve spoken with many parents, children, teachers and care givers in the community that have and still are struggling. I will advocate for increased resources, mental health supports & inclusive educational policy and programming. I’ve been living and working in the Transcona area for twenty-five (25) years and have likely crossed paths with many of you. I’m empathetic and honest and will serve with integrity but also hold others accountable.
