Questionnaire Response

Tara Smith - St. James - Assiniboia - East Ward

What got you into politics?

This is my first foray into the world of politics. As a long-time resident of St. James, I am greatly invested in the community. My wife and I have two children who are in elementary school in the division. I am also a teacher with over 15 years of experience. Working in one division and living in another has given me perspective on how differently school boards can approach the same challenges. Bill 64 and the pandemic brought into focus the vital role that school divisions play in supporting the specific needs of their communities. I want to be a part of the decision-making process for my children and all the students of SJASD.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

My 15 years of experience as a teacher have given me invaluable insight into the education system. I know what our students and staff need to succeed and have a keen understanding of where resources can most effectively be distributed.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

My experience in the classroom has shaped my views on these issues. Every student has the right to succeed. It is essential to foster solid teachings, rich learning opportunities and positive outcomes for all students. I am a strong supporter of the arts, athletics, and the wide variety of programs that SJASD offers. Schools must provide enriching and interesting learning experiences for all types of learners. Student safety and security are essential. It is crucial that all policies are evidence-based and driven by the most current data, while taking into consideration the concerns of all community members. Students must be supported in becoming literate, numerate, technologically adept, critical thinkers that are contributing members of their communities.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I live in my ward and am deeply committed to my community. I will work diligently to advocate for all members of the St. James-Assiniboia School Division and will seek input from staff, students, and parents to ensure that needs, inclusion, and equity for all are met.
