Questionnaire Response

Chris Clacio - Mayoral Candidates

What got you into politics?

Reason for running from my website about section…

Chris believes that citizens have the power to transform our city by breaking down stereotypes and oppressive systems. Citizens, with their civic representatives, can build a city that puts people first. Over the years, Chris and other like-minded youth have been gathering regularly in civics system literacy conversation tables like Politix Brainstorm and later, Intercivics.

Chris has been acting on his civic responsibility to participate in the city politics by running for school trustee in 7 Oaks School Division ward 2, and then for mayor last time as a registered candidate. Is involved in Prairie Asian Organizers, in 2016 graduated from the “Next UP” leadership program, and volunteers with Indigenous initiatives as a helper.

Chris heard his calling to innovate city governance through building citizen capacity from his start as a volunteer helper and participant in student councils, interest groups, clubs and courses. In high school, he was honoured with a citizen engagement award for his extensive participation and upbeat attitude. He studied and participated in activities related to the topics of human rights, racism, political and philosophical ideas, citizen engagement, and community service.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

From my website about section… What my lived experiences would compliment my role in the office of the mayor…

Chris sees his experience as a first-generation child of immigrant parents being a gift in both its challenges and opportunities. This experience gives him a sense of unity with all citizens, including Black, Indigenous, Filipino and people of colour.

Chris is an urban Canadian Filipino youth with 16 years of experience volunteering for community building initiatives that encourage youth and citizen engagement. He works at a grocery store in the Maples, where he lives. Shaped by family and cultural values, Chris is a first generation Filipino-Canadian son of a single mom in a large extended family that he is deeply committed to. He dedicates his time studying and discussing local civic issues.

Chris wants to build relationships amongst those who are different from each other to come to a common ground. Chris’s personal role as a citizen – one he’ll take to public office – is to build relationships, gain knowledge, and support other people.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Win or Lose the top 3 priorities that I vowed to advocate and educate in my role as part of the office of the mayor is for better regional coordination with a multi sector cross jurisdiction approach through the creation of a Provincial Constitution similar to the Province of British Columbia which is the only Province in Canada to have its very own constitutions. Systems change as a “civic practitioner” and a “policy entrepreneur” I fully am committed to seeing a calibrated basic income program or calibrated wealth distribution system be implemented and researched within the Winnipeg Metro Region aka the future Capital Planning Region. Early in the election I made a vow that I plan to expand and rebrand the office of public engagement into the office of civic engagement that is based on social innovation labs similar to how the community host program at the Millennium Library was design out of a road map made by Urban Indigenous Young People. And lastly the creation a 4 year participatory budgeting process within city hall that would allow for more citizens of Winnipeg to be able to design, develop, and evaluate city services based on the idea of tax choice.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

Bio on the city’s website…
