Questionnaire Response

Daevid Ramey - St. James

What got you into politics?

I have always been interested in how political engagement can be a tool to bring about positive change.

I want to help develop and influence policy to benefit my neighbours and community, to create equity in our services, provide a voice for the voiceless and represent people who want change, but don’t know how to do so.

My goal is to build communities that reflect the values and improve the lives of the people who live in them.

Winnipeg has always held itself back. We should be bold and forward-thinking and look to embrace new ideas.

I have always been an active member of my community – from organizing block parties to participating on local boards and associations, the people in my neighbourhood and our city inspire me.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

My practical experience includes a proven track record on sustainability (from community clean ups and composting, to tree planting and diverting waste) and advocating for policy change (including Bourkevale 30, the nature playground at Discovery Children’s Centre, city-managed washrooms in Bourkevale Park and more.)

I’ve also facilitated neighbourhood activities such as weekly bike rides and winter activities open to all. I’ve worked with public and social groups to create change, including Mother Earth Recycling, Oyate Tipi, 2SLGBTQIA+ groups and MEVA.

In everything I do, I lead through my values, including togetherness, caring for people and the planet, keeping things simple, renewing and improving on what we already have, and giving and taking responsibility.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Our city is showing signs of decay and our neighbors don’t feel safe, or feel their concerns are ignored. Our Residents feel disconnected from their city. We need to re-engage everyone! Our opportunity is to create spaces, services and programs where everyone feels welcome and valued.

The biggest issue brought up on the doorstep is crime. I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all-solution. I will focus on initiatives that promote crime prevention at both the city and community level and will support programs that lend a helping hand to those living with addictions, experiencing homelessness or need additional mental health supports.

St. James’ infrastructure and parks need renewal and attention, and our active transportation paths need to be maintained and expanded. We need to invest in our already established neighbourhoods to ensure they are able to support our needs today and into the future.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I’m a collaborator and I listen. I will work with council to bring about change and renew our city and with the residents of St James to make sure their concerns are addressed and solutions are acted on.
