Questionnaire Response

Evan Duncan - Charleswood - Tuxedo

What got you into politics?

A deep commitment to community is the reason I am running for city council in the Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood ward.

I am a lifelong resident of the ward along with my wife and three daughters. My deep roots in the community extend to local businesses, community centres, youth and families. My connections are based on real relationships forged through hard work and results. I wish to raise my family in a strong, safe and vibrant community. Our community needs a leader with real experience who is forward thinking and leads by example.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have spent the last twenty years advocating and volunteering in the community. From coaching at our community clubs, to running youth outreach programs and volunteering with non-profit organizations. I have been the Chair of the Charleswood Advisory Committee for the past four years, listening to residents about the issues and concerns that are important to them.

In my professional career, I have served in the public sector working for Manitoba Justice over the last 11 years. In this capacity, I have worked with both youth and adults, and their families who have been impacted by addictions, mental health, and homelessness. I have also worked closely with law enforcement, the courts, preventative security measures and community-based programs. These experiences have given me a unique perspective on the challenges impacting our communities.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

The issues important to me are those that are important to the community.

Being accountable and responsive to the constituents is critically important. Leadership means listening carefully to others with a desire to understand their concerns, ideas and perspectives. Elected officials are expected to be accessible to the community through regular meetings and events, and by phone and email. My commitment is to have clear, diverse, and regular communication with the community.

It is through this communication that we can address the concerns of all residents.

Community safety, our roads and sidewalks, protecting our invaluable green spaces, accountability at city hall, these are but some of the most pressing concerns residents express to me on a regular basis, that we must find improvement and solutions to, for a better community and city.

The divisiveness at city hall. While we are elected as individuals by the constituents, we must work together at city hall as a team. Our role is to debate and vote as an individual but then respect and support the decision of the majority. Me must set aside our personal interests and influences for the common good of the residents of our city.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

This election is about strong leadership from our community, for our community.

It is about listening and working hard for the residents of our ward. I am committed to putting in the hard work in our community and at city hall for you.

I believe this quote from Henry Ford is an important reminder in how we need to govern as your elected official.

“Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”
