Questionnaire Response

John Orlikow - River Heights - Fort Garry

What got you into politics?

I have a lifelong belief in public service. My father and uncle who were devote advocates in our duty to giving back to our community instilled this value in me.

I love the neighbourhood I represent. I grew up here and have chosen to raise my family here. I have worked hard as the councillor for River Heights-Fort Garry to listen to my constituents, to support their grassroots efforts and to give them a voice at city hall. We have accomplished so much as a community – but there is still work to be done. I have chosen to run again to ensure we can maintain this momentum in the years to come.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am honoured that the residents of River Heights-Fort Garry elected me as their councillor for the past three terms. I hope this demonstrates their faith in my abilities. However, I do not take this for granted. I know it is my responsibility to always renew their trust in me to represent them fairly, honestly and in a transparent manner. While serving as the councillor for my ward, I was asked to sit as the Deputy Mayor. This added responsibility provided another opportunity for my residents to have a say in how our city as a whole is shaped and to champion issues that are of local concern to a wider audience.

Before serving as a city councillor, I started as an entrepreneur and small business owner, managing companies in recycling, education and conflict resolution. During that time, I became a school trustee with the Winnipeg School Division and finished my tenure as board chair.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I believe in re-investing in River Heights-Fort Garry to keep our historic community a vibrant, safe and active place for all families.

During my time as a city councillor, I’ve heard directly from my constituents that in my ward that we need to focus onmaking our community safer, fixing our streets and sidewalks, investing in our community centers and green spaces, and protecting our trees and the environment.

Should I be re-elected as city councillor, I will continue to advocate and champion these issues.
