Questionnaire Response

Ross Eadie - Mynarski

What got you into politics?

Getting involved in the disability activist/advocate movement, after graduating with the top honour from Red River College’s business administration program, led me into politics.  At the Independence 1992’s international disability conference, we in Canada had many successes in advocacy, but we acknowledged persons with disabilities needed to be behind the scenes in government to effect real change.  Of course working as an advocate on various committees and having children meant I had a bigger concern for the future for all Winnipeggers.  Dan Vandal said Ross you sound like a politician.  Did you ever think of running – yes in 1998.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

With my education, work history and general life experience, I have given a lot to the city and Council over my twelve years in office.  In my life, there is way too much to describe in this format.  My strengths are finance and analysis of many different by-laws, issues and policies.  Well, I stand up and fight for the working class as that is where I come from.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

From a governance policy effort, I mean to resolve our city problems:  dumped garbage, encampments and derelict buildings. My six commitments work towards some resolution to those issues, but all six commitments are good for the North End, West Kildonan and Winnipeg:

Work for Fair City Financing

“Today, Mynarski residents face surmounting financial pressure, needing to work more than one job in many cases.”

Improvements in Crime and Safety

“Calls to the Winnipeg Police Service for crime, and non-crime issues – often health crisis related – continue to rise, with the WPS unable to respond in a timely fashion.”

Continue Focus on Parks and Recreation

“Winnipeggers demanded and received plans to improve and renew green space, leisure, and recreation services.”

Consolidate Solid Waste Collection

“All the garbage dumped and laying around is ours and affects all of us.”

Better Employment with the City

“This year the City of Winnipeg had a difficult time hiring workers to staff and fulfill the goals of some City services, like neighborhood wading pools, because the City  no  longer pays living wages.”

Continue Roads Renewal and Focus on Major Infrastructure

“Inflation in construction costs is reducing the number of streets that get renewed each year.”

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

In 1998, I knew what a councillor’s office dealt with on a day-to-day basis.  When I won in 2010, I, the councillor, deal with all the various functions of Council governance which is huge in itself.  A councillor hires an executive assistant to assist in the office and deal with day-to-day case work called service requests as the councillor needs to keep on thousands of reports each year.  The councillor also trys to make amendments to by-laws and policies to make city systems work better.  What voters do not see is all that behind-the-scenes negotiations and debate with colleagues and public servants.

I am always working for a better future.  Ross Listens!
