Questionnaire Response

Steve Lipischak - Transcona

What got you into politics?

I’ve always been interested in helping others. Be it with helping those less fortunate in my work with charitable organizations, or just helping neighbours and friends find answers. Being in Transcona is much like having a huge extended family…some of them need a little assistance once in awhile. We could all use a little help now and then.

I was approached to enter the race by many who thought Transcona was being treated as an afterthought by the powers that be at City Hall. We should all have an equal voice an equal vote when it comes to steering this city, and we haven’t for years. It’s time we did. I’m proud to call this community home, and share it with as many as I can on my travels.

In short, why politics? It allows me to reach and help as many people as want it. It allows me to show my pride in our community, and to share how great it is. I am just a Transconian that wants better for his area and for our city.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

As the new City Councillor for Transcona, I bring years of business experience, both in board rooms and dealing with the public. I have made contacts and friendships in all levels of government, and have knowledge and experience in dealing with many different personalities and egos to work together and get the job done in a way and manner that benefits all.

I have worked in Boardrooms, and I have built pools and hot tubs. I have broken bread with CEOs and I have had a refreshment with electricians. I’m just  a regular guy that has the experience to work with and for all different people. Someone called me a blue shirt-white collar kind of guy.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

There are so many important issues that need to be worked on, that we don’t have enough room to discuss all of them. But, I will be brief on a few… one important issue is the homeless issue that is affecting all of us. There is no quick easy solution and anyone saying so is trying to blow smoke. You can’t love the problem away and you can’t police it away either, but, we can find a way to combat the issue by working these two sides together, with the help of experts and the political will power to do something about it the right way.

Increase in crime is also high on a priority list. I believe we need more of a police presence on our city streets. We don’t need to hire more officers, we just have to use the police we have in a more efficient and cost saving manner. Why should they be detained for hours in a hospital, when they could be patrolling the streets?

Please visit my website for more info on these and other important issues. Let’s fix our city first before we build shiny things to say how great we are.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I would like to thank all of the people I’ve met, some for the first time, others in a renewal of friendships. It’s been great to meet and discuss topics that effect all of us. I’ve been speaking of change, that we need it, but, I’m not just talking of changing personnel at Council, I’m speaking of changing the culture at City Hall. Maybe I’m naive in my beliefs, but in order to affect change, we need to start at the top, and there is not time like now, with a new Mayor coming in, to change how the city does business and treats her citizens. I work for you, not the other way around.

But, most important, we need to get out and vote. That is your chance to speak up. So get out and vote. I hope I’ve done enough to earn your trust and support on election day. But please get out and vote.
