Questionnaire Response

Brenda Bage - River East - Transcona - 4

What got you into politics?

I have been active in my children’s schools and activities for many years. I’ve been growing increasingly frustrated with the amount of “red tape” that school staff have to go through, and the lack of consideration parent and school staff receive when it comes to planning changes.  Many parents also feel that their concerns are being disregarded.

I want to make sure we have a system where all stakeholders (school staff, parents, students and the community) are given an opportunity to weigh in on major decisions and feel that their voice and opinion are valued and being heard.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have been involved in several boards, including child care centers, nursery schools, and parents councils. During my 7 years on the board for my children’s nursery school I was part of the committee that re-wrote all of the polices, and dealt with managing the first set of COVID restrictions.

I enjoy the collaborative nature of a board, and feel that we can do our best when we are around people with strengths different from our own.

As a parent of school age children, and also an Educational Assistant, I see the issues that our parents are facing at home, and also what our classrooms look like right now. I want to make sure we are supporting our staff, supporting our parents, and supporting our students.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

There are a several issues I want to bring to the table if I am elected, but here are a few of them.

  • Programs like bus transportation, before and after care and lunch supervision have to be available and affordable when parents need them. This means we need to work with other levels of government to make sure services available in our schools actually serve our communities.
  • Our classrooms looks incredibly different than they did 20 years ago. We have increased additional needs students, increased new comers to Canada, and increased variety in learning levels, all while decreasing funding for supports. Our teachers simply cannot be expected to meet each student where they are when all 25 students are in completely different places. We need to increase clinician hours, increase the availability of numeracy and literacy programs and increase in classroom EAs. Our students must be fully supported to achieve their full potential.
  •  I want our trustees to be available and involved in the school communities. Our parents should know who their trustees are, and have full confidence their concerns are being taken under consideration.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I understand that there will be a learning curve if I am elected. It will take time to become more familiar with the processes and policies of the board. I have never claimed to have all the answers, or that I am coming into this with all the knowledge necessary. I am coming with a willing attitude, to learn from the information available to me, and from those who are more established in the roles.

I want to make sure we are always looking at the end goal, and finding the best way to get there at all times. We need to make sure every decision we are making is for the best of the students. Consulting with our families, our staff and our communities will help us consider all aspects, and insure we are actually making a well thought out decision.

I am available for contact at 204-221-2951, [email protected] or on Facebook/Instagram @BageforRETSD. I look forward to hearing from you, and hope that I will be able to stand for all the students of RETSD soon!
