Questionnaire Response

Derrick Dujlovic - St. Vital

What got you into politics?

Honestly, I got into politics because of my kids. For years I have followed what’s been happening at City Hall, but having kids of my own really crystallized the fact that this City is not properly serving it’s citizens. This is true for the residents of St. Vital who have dealt with decaying infrastructure, lack of communication, and a rise in crime which has not been addressed by the current crop at City Hall.

The residents of the St. Vital voting ward deserve a candidate who will stand up for what’s right for them. A candidate who will work collaboratively with groups both inside and outside of City Hall to deal with the root cause issues in our communities. They also need a candidate who’s not afraid to stand up to the Mayor when needed, and someone who will be accessible for the community. I intend to be that person.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am a Journeyman Red Seal Collison Refinish Technician, and have been in the trade for 15+ years, having been Red Seal certified for the last 10. Unlike many folks who get into politics, I know what it’s like to work hard in the trenches day after day. Long hours, extreme temperatures, dirty, physical, high pressure and precision  work is my world. That’s why I would never take the hard working taxpayers for granted, as this seems to be an ongoing theme at City Hall.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Public Safety is a big one. Suffice it to say, the Police Budget vs what’s happening on the City streets is not sustainable. As Councillor, I would push City Hall to work with groups who have experience dealing with the root cause issues affecting our community.

The conservation of the St. Vital voting ward Green Spaces and tree canopy are of vital importance, and must be protected. The tree canopy must also be replaced at a faster rate than is currently allocated, and we need to properly care for it.

Roads and backlanes are also an embarrassing issue that I intend to rectify. Residents concerns must be addressed in a timely fashion, and road maintenance after repair must be instituted to prevent the current issues plaguing the area to return.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

The St. Vital voting ward, and Winnipeg at large is at a crossroads. Residents need to stand up, make their voices heard, and hold the incumbents accountable for what’s happened to our City. I expect to set the example for all other Councillors to follow once elected: communication, collaboration, hard work and most importantly listening to constituents is what will fix this City. I want to be that conduit for the St. Vital voting ward. I expect to be of service to the residents. Not the Mayor, not special interest groups, the residents. That is my absolute commitment come Election Day.
