Questionnaire Response

Jas Hari - Seven Oaks - 2

What got you into politics?

While interacting with community in past years, I realized the disconnect between public and school board in Seven Oaks School Division. Parents are concerned about the quality of education their kids are getting. I talked to teachers also, who (requested to remain anonymous) mentioned about not having enough assistance. Parents of the neighborhoods under this school division think their concerns are not being listened. Many parents chose to send their children in private schools due to flaws in public education system. They requested me to run for school trustee. People want change now. I think every child deserves quality education regardless of their parents’ financial status. People shouldn’t be forced to send their kids to private schools for getting quality education. This is the main reason I’m in. I think this is more of social work than politics. Thanks.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

My most important experience is being a MOTHER of school going child. Every day, I am learning something new and unique with my son about the needs of education system. Other than that, I am a public servant since last 13 years. Communicating with people, listening to and resolving their concerns has always been my priority. I am educated. I have Master of Science degree Majoring in Entomology, Bachelor of Education and PG Diploma in Journalism & Mass Communication. Being very educated, I know the value of quality education. I also have teaching (paid and volunteer) experience in past. From my education and work background, I think I will be perfect candidate as school trustee.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I would like to create connection between public and school board, so that people’s voice is listened while policy making.

There are already some bilingual programs running in some schools, I would like to add more such programs, depending upon community needs.

Because Seven Oaks School Division is hun of new immigrants, this is necessary to have more adult learning programs to be added, so that they feel included in the society.

Easy availability of school gyms for indoor sports activities (especially in winters), so that we can create healthy communities and it will reduce the burden on our health system.

I would like to have more programs for children’s social skills and behavioural development, mental health programs for children and teachers.

These issues are very important me and are close to my heart, because healthy and happy community is always my priority.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am educated, young and very motivated person. I think we should have diversity on school board in terms of ethnicity, gender and age. I firmly believe that people from diverse fields bring different ideas and vision, which is very important for any organization. This is like a bouquet of different flowers.
