Questionnaire Response

Laurie Kozak - Winnipeg - 8

What got you into politics?

The incredible support I’ve received from the community has motivated me to become a voice for WSD families.

For 24 years I have been a proud resident of Winnipeg’s North End, where I am raising my family with my husband Michael, an alternative teacher. I’m involved parent and I care about my community and the education our children receive.

One of the reasons I decided to run for School Board Trustee Ward 8 is because Winnipeg School Division has the lowest graduation rates, specifically in Ward 8.

Through working and volunteering, I have been passionate about advocating for families in my community and standing up for our children’s right to safety, belonging, and quality education.

We all want the best for our children. They need someone who will stand up and be a force for change. I commit to being a voice for Winnipeg School Division families at the school board level.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am an active community member.  For years I served and provided leadership as a board member for the North Point Douglas Women’s Centre, and chair of the parent council for Victoria-Albert School. I am currently co-chair on parent council for St. John’s High School, where my son is a student. I have attended many Inner City Community Advisory Committee and French Immersion Advisory Committee meetings throughout the years to represent parents. I worked in the North End as the Director of Development for Inner City Youth Alive, where I educated the public about challenges faced by inner city youth. I have been an event coordinator for many non-profits like the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Manitoba, The Arthritis Society and The Dream Factory

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Safeguarding Programs and Services

Funding cuts have the potential to affect staffing, services, and safety in our schools. While we advocate for increased government funding, we must also look at alternative sources of support, including public/private partnerships, fundraising and sponsorship to address student needs.

Empower Schools and Educators

The Winnipeg School Division is incredibly diverse. We must look at schools on an individual basis to determine their priorities, instead of a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Schools and educators know what their students need – let’s empower them to meet those needs.

Removing Barriers to Education

Many families in the WSD are facing major challenges, such as food insecurity, that impact their child’s ability to attend or succeed at school. Kids can’t learn on an empty stomach. School-based food programs and community outreach can help connect families with basic needs and essential services.

Accessibility For All

Being inclusive means accommodating the needs of all WSD students. Some schools lack the essential resources and infrastructure needed to support students with disabilities and their families. Mental health supports are equally essential – the pandemic has worsened what was already a national mental health crisis. We need to ensure all students are given the tools they need to succeed.
