Questionnaire Response

Linda Karn - Pembina Trails - 1

What got you into politics?

Really just a general interest. For many years I have followed politics at all three levels of government. I am in regular contact with my MP, MLA and city Councillor. I let them know what issues matter the most to my family.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I have a great deal of work and life experiences that will compliment my role as a School Trustee some of which include being on many volunteer boards in my community and working with youth in many programs including coaching soccer and at a large youth centre. My 30+ years as a professional and volunteer event planner would be the most significant. Establishing and carefully following a budget is a major focus of an event planner and the major part of the role of a school trustee.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

As a School Trustee, the issues that are most important to me are the ones that I have heard from the many parents and grandparents that I have spoken with during my campaign. These include assessing the need for another French immersion school in Ward 1. Currently, Charleswood only has one K to 4 French immersion school. Parents are asking for more EA’s as both a general helper in the classroom and ensuring that every individual special needs child has an assigned EA. More spaces in before and after school care have been requested as well as a meal program for all kids and/or just those that need it. Many parents don’t want to have SOGI implemented in the curriculum nor critical race theory and have reservations about the extent to which sexuality is taught and at what ages. Parents appreciate the line in my platform in regards to more of a focus on reading, writing and math in the classrooms and doing my best to direct budgetary resources in that direction. Other subjects are important, but without a solid reading/writing/comprehension foundation the students won’t get far in any subject.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I love children and I love education. I want the best in education for ALL children regardless of their background — ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status. EVERY child matters. I have been listening to the concerns of parents and will ensure that these items are addressed when appropriate at the board level. I will bring common sense, a level head and attention to details to each and every meeting. I am retired and have the time to put into doing my best to serve the community.
