Questionnaire Response

Rebecca Chambers - Winnipeg - 4

What got you into politics?

Like many, I have been watching the political landscape and tone shifting away from compassion, collaboration and research. I realized the increasing need for more involved, conscientious citizens to step forward and not only counter this shift but provide a practical and sustainable path forward.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I am a teacher, a parent, a Metis citizen, a union executive, and a Master’s student in Education Administration. I value relationship-building as a cornerstone to solving big problems, and I honour and integrate the gifts of others. Combining my experience with my ways of working in relationship means I can recognize patterns and influences and work to better integrate processes to benefit a complex whole.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

Below is a short list of my top priorities.

  1. Audit the funding gaps in public education and present a tangible and accessible portrait of how much our provincial government is and is not funding.
  2. Reassess the funding model for students with additional needs, and move toward best practices in this area.
  3. Strengthen the relationships between schools and communities by connecting neighbourhood needs and resources to those within the school.
  4. Revisit the ending of full day kindergarten.
  5. Get police out of our schools.
  6. Nutrition programs in all schools.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I am overwhelmed by the early support in Wolseley, West Broadway, ArmstrongPoint and Downtown. I look forward to serving all of these communities, and building relationships with constituents to work together toward improving, challenging and celebrating public education in Winnipeg School Division.
