Questionnaire Response

Stu Nixon - Pembina Trails - 1

What got you into politics?

Although becoming a member of the board of trustees is a political process, I’m not motivated politically. I’m interested in continuing to contribute to the educational experiences of the learners in our community.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

I’ve just retired from a 35 year teaching career. The last 20 at Oak Park High School.

In addition to teaching, I’ve been the Phys Ed program leader and a coach of a very successful football program.

As a Phys Ed program leader you need to be well acquainted with staff in all subject areas. You depend upon them to help manage all extra curricular programing. Their volunteerism needs to be valued. As you get to know them you learn about their issues and concerns as educators.

As the head of a large football program your dealing with 80 athlete’s and their families, 25-30 coaches and a large number of volunteers. There are tens of thousands of dollars to be raised each year. Everyone has to be working together and supporting one another for the program to be successful.

In both of these situations you require very sharp people skills. You need to be able to work as a team. As a board member, you must also work as a team. The board and the Senior Administration Team, together.

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

My priority as a school trustee will be to sustain an environment in our schools that is safe, empathetic and inclusive to all learners, staff and community members. We have a diverse population of learners in our community. I have some solid thoughts regarding programming that will improve student success with struggling learners. That’s a long conversation however. More than the two hundred word limit I have here. I’ll be just one member of a large team. The current board has established an exceptionally talented Senior Administration Team. I’ve had the good fortune of working with some of them. At some point I’m sure I will have an opportunity to present my thoughts to SAT and the other board members. As a team, we will progress from there.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

I’ve lived in this community for eighteen years. I’ve taught and volunteered here for twenty. I can say with confidence that over the past twenty years, I’ve committed more time to this educational community than any other candidate. I’m aware in detail of what is required at the front line level. I’m very well connected in the community.
