Questionnaire Response

Susan Olynik - River East - Transcona - 4

What got you into politics?

A few years ago, I retired from a provincial Crown corporation where I was the VP of corporate communications and social responsibility. I was always interested in giving more back to our community, especially once I retired.   Because I care about our children’s future, I believed that my career experience, knowledge and skills would be attributes to the Board of Trustees.  Therefore, I ran in the 2018 election and proudly became a School Trustee.  I am now running for re-election.

I have a vested interest in becoming a trustee.  I am a parent and was involved in parent councils while my two sons attended school.  They have graduated from River East Collegiate.  I currently have young nephews attending schools in Ward 4.  I am actively involved in their lives and want them, and all children to succeed.

A trustee has an important governance responsibility to ensure that all children have a quality education.  An education that prepares them for life after they graduate.    Trustees oversee the division to ensure that innovative and engaging programming is provided in a safe, caring and inclusive environment. Trustees are also responsible for approving a budget of over $200 million.

What experience will you bring to compliment your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee)?

My knowledge and skills are beneficial to the school board and serving as a trustee.  I have career and board experience in the executive, communications, social responsibility, fiscal and non-profit areas.  I am an effective leader and understand governance and fiscal responsibility.  I make informed decisions and focus on reaching goals. Over the last four years I have made a difference by advocating for:

  •  increased communications within the community including parents.  As a result, one of the board priorities for the 2022/23 year is to develop a communication strategy that will be monitored for success
  • numerous parents who contacted me for assistance with their child’s education and well being
  • the development of a strategic plan.  A new plan was prepared to guide the School Division over the next three years.
  • additional funding from the province. We have been restricted in adding revenue to our budget, despite our growing student population and student needs.  We must continue to have ongoing relations with the province.
  • a transparent budget.  I always asked questions about how the money was going to be used.  It is critical that the priority should always be on the classroom
  • hiring more teachers and added supports for our children

What are some issues that you would like to stand for in your role as (Mayor / Councillor / School Trustee), and why are these issues important to you?

I am hoping to make a difference in the lives of students by being part of a team that provides a quality education to all of them. A quality education is one that focuses on the whole child – the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of all.  Students are our future, and they must have the skills and knowledge when they graduate, so they can contribute to society and lead happy and fulfilling lives.

We want all students to achieve in an environment of high expectations and meaningful learning opportunities.  This includes children of all abilities, from all backgrounds, genders, and ethnicities.  Every student should be accepted, respected and valued.  Everyone is unique and can achieve success in their education.

I have been accessible to the community and have always been available to help parents and members of the community with their questions, and also to advocate for parents and their children.

Do you have any other comments regarding your candidacy?

Over the past two years Covid has had an impact on our students and employees.  Mental health supports should continue and be enhanced.   Remedial learning is also taking place and should continue.  We also need to assess the gaps between how our student outcomes were prior to the pandemic and what they are after the pandemic.  As part of a team, I will always advocate for our students to ensure they are receiving the support they require.
